To the decision makers for health in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
Cancer care is at a tipping point. We urge you to take urgent, radical action now to ring-fence cancer services in the 'second wave'.
As a group of people with a current or recent cancer diagnosis from across the UK with the support of thousands of Macmillan campaigners behind us, we speak for many when we say that now is the most worrying time in recent history to get a cancer diagnosis or start treatment.
During the first wave of the pandemic, vital appointments, surgeries and treatments were cancelled or postponed. We know all too well the devastation the backlog has already caused for so many. And we are terrified to see this happening again in the ‘second wave’, with staff being redeployed and intensive care wards filling up in the worst affected areas.
Not enough progress has been made to clear the backlog while coronavirus levels were lower. Now, the only way for UK governments to prevent the backlog from growing is to ring-fence cancer services in the 'second wave'.
Now more than ever, people living with cancer must be able to get the right treatment and care, with the right support, at the right time.
You hold the power to stop many more people facing months of worry and delays. Please don't let cancer become the forgotten ‘C’.
